Black Helmet Snail (Neritina pulligera)

Overview

The Black Helmet Snail is a hardy, attractive freshwater Nerite species known for its smooth, dark shell that resembles a polished helmet. Highly valued for its exceptional algae-eating abilities, it is one of the best natural cleaners for freshwater aquariums and will not reproduce in freshwater.

Origin

Widely distributed across Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting clean rivers, streams, and brackish estuaries.

Feeding

A dedicated algae grazer. Consumes:

  • Soft film algae

  • Diatoms

  • Green spot algae

  • Biofilm

Supplement with algae wafers or blanched vegetables if the tank is very clean.

Tank Mates

Extremely peaceful and compatible with:

  • Tetras, rasboras, danios

  • Corydoras & peaceful catfish

  • Livebearers

  • Shrimp

  • Most community fish

Avoid: Loaches, puffers, large cichlids, or any fish known to nip at or eat snails.

None. This is a completely peaceful, plant-safe species.
