Description

Spotted Hawk Fish Cirrhitichthys Oxycephalus

Overview:

The Spotted Hawkfish is a vibrant and intriguing marine fish, known for its striking appearance characterized by a reddish body dotted with numerous white to light blue spots. It has a distinctive set of “fringed” appendages above its eyes, resembling eyebrows. Growing up to 9 cm (about 3.5 inches) in length, this small but captivating fish adds a dynamic presence to any saltwater aquarium.

Origin:

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Spotted Hawkfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky outcroppings, often seen perching on coral branches or rubble from a shallow depth down to about 30 meters (98 feet).

Feeding:

This species is carnivorous, with a diet in the wild consisting primarily of small fish and crustaceans. In the aquarium, they will readily accept a variety of meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should occur twice daily.

Tank Mates:

While generally peaceful towards other fish, the Spotted Hawkfish can be aggressive towards smaller, similar-shaped fish and invertebrates, especially shrimps. Suitable tank mates include larger fish and those that can hold their own, avoiding overly aggressive species to maintain harmony in the tank.

Aggression:

Shows territorial behavior towards smaller or similarly sized bottom-dwelling fish. Its level of aggression is moderate, and careful selection of tank mates is advised to prevent bullying.

Experience Level:

Intermediate – Due to its specific feeding and tank mate requirements, as well as needing a well-structured environment with plenty of hiding spots.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F)
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 SG
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrites: 0 ppm
  • Nitrates: <20 ppm

Proper acclimation is crucial for the Spotted Hawkfish, and a well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters will ensure its health and vibrancy in your marine community.
