Paradise Goby – Amblyeleotris diagonalis

Overview:
The Paradise Goby is a striking burrow-dwelling goby known for its delicate body adorned with diagonal stripes and bright red accents. Often forming a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, it occupies a shared burrow for protection and companionship. This species is peaceful, visually captivating, and highly engaging in sandy reef aquariums.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, typically found in sandy patches near coral reefs, where it excavates burrows or partners with burrowing shrimp.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on small invertebrates, copepods, and micro-crustaceans. In captivity, it accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and sinking micro-pellets. Frequent small feedings help replicate its natural foraging behavior.

Tank Mates:
Peaceful and reef-safe, compatible with other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. Avoid predatory species that could disturb burrows or prey on the goby.

Aggression:
Low. Territorial around its burrow but otherwise very peaceful.

Experience Level:
Intermediate. Requires a sandy substrate at least 3 inches deep and plenty of hiding spaces. Housing with a pistol shrimp is ideal to mimic natural behavior.

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
