Description

Red Check Goby – Parapercis sp.

Overview:
The Red Check Goby is a striking sand- and rubble-dwelling marine fish recognized for its distinct red-checkered pattern along a streamlined body. Active and engaging, it spends much of its time hovering just above the substrate or darting between rocks, making it an interesting addition to community and reef tanks.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including tropical reef flats and sandy lagoon areas, where it occupies sandy patches and rubble near coral structures.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds primarily on small invertebrates, copepods, and tiny crustaceans. In aquariums, it accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality sinking pellets. Small, frequent feedings are recommended.

Tank Mates:
Peaceful and reef-safe, suitable for tanks with other small to medium, non-aggressive fish. Avoid large predatory species that may see it as prey.

Aggression:
Low. Territorial around its chosen spot but generally peaceful with other fish.

Experience Level:
Intermediate. Requires a well-established tank with sand or fine rubble substrate for natural behavior and perching.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–78°F (23–26°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons

The Red Check Goby (Parapercis sp.) is a colorful, active, and peaceful sand-dweller that adds both visual appeal and natural substrate interaction to marine aquariums, making it an excellent choice for intermediate hobbyists.
