Description

Tiger Jawfish – Opistognathus randalli

Overview:
The Tiger Jawfish is a burrow-dwelling reef fish with a striking tiger-striped pattern across its elongated body. Known for its alert and watchful nature, this species spends much of its time hovering near the entrance of its burrow, quickly darting inside if threatened. Its fascinating behavior and bold markings make it a standout addition to a reef aquarium.

Origin:
Found in the Indo-Pacific, particularly around sandy and rubble-strewn reef flats where it digs deep burrows for protection.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – thrives on a diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality prepared marine foods. Will also hunt small crustaceans in the sand.

Tank Mates:
Reef-safe and generally peaceful. Best kept with non-aggressive fish and inverts. Avoid housing with large predatory fish.

Aggression:
Low. The Tiger Jawfish is shy and reclusive, spending most of its time at the burrow entrance. May be territorial toward other jawfish in small tanks.

Experience Level:
Intermediate. Requires a deep sandbed (3–5 inches) and plenty of rubble or small rocks to construct burrows. Needs a secure lid, as it is prone to jumping.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons

The Tiger Jawfish (Opistognathus randalli) is a unique and striking burrow-builder that adds both personality and natural behavior to marine aquariums when provided with the right environment.
