Cuban Hogfish (Bodianus pulchellus)

Overview

The Cuban Hogfish is a bold and colorful marine species known for its bright red and yellow coloration and curious, active nature. Its striking appearance and hardy temperament make it a favorite among aquarists seeking a lively showpiece for larger saltwater aquariums.

Origin

Native to the tropical Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico, the Cuban Hogfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky slopes, often swimming in open water above reef structures.

Feeding

A carnivorous species, the Cuban Hogfish thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped squid, and quality frozen or pellet marine preparations. Feed two to three times daily to support its active metabolism and vibrant colors.

Tank Mates

Best suited to tanks with robust or semi-aggressive species such as tangs, triggers, groupers, and large wrasses. Avoid very small fish or ornamental crustaceans, which may be viewed as food.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive, especially as it matures. The Cuban Hogfish may establish territories or display dominance toward similar-looking species. A spacious tank with plenty of rockwork and swimming space helps reduce aggression.

Experience Level

Ideal for intermediate to advanced aquarists. This hardy fish adapts well to captivity but requires a large, well-maintained marine aquarium (minimum 125 gallons) with excellent filtration and stable conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

With proper care and a nutritious diet, the Cuban Hogfish will thrive and bring vibrant color and constant activity to your marine display.
