Description

Mexican Hogfish (Bodianus diplotaenia)

Overview

The Mexican Hogfish is a large, colorful, and active species known for its impressive transformation in coloration as it matures—from vibrant yellow and purple juveniles to striking greenish-blue adults with bold facial markings. Energetic and hardy, this fish makes an excellent addition to spacious fish-only marine systems.

Origin

Native to the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the Mexican Hogfish is commonly found around the rocky reefs and kelp beds of Mexico’s Pacific coast, the Galápagos Islands, and the Gulf of California. It thrives in warm, open waters with plenty of rock formations for shelter and foraging.

Feeding

A carnivorous predator, the Mexican Hogfish enjoys a protein-rich diet of meaty foods such as chopped shrimp, squid, clams, and marine fish flesh, as well as frozen preparations like mysis or krill. Offer two to three feedings daily for optimal growth and coloration.

Tank Mates

Best suited to large, semi-aggressive marine communities. It coexists well with tangs, triggers, groupers, and other robust species but should not be kept with small crustaceans or timid fish, as it may view them as prey.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive, especially as it grows. Males may become territorial, particularly in confined spaces. A large tank with ample swimming room and hiding spots will reduce aggression and stress.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its size and active nature. The Mexican Hogfish is hardy and adapts well to captivity but requires a large, well-maintained aquarium (minimum 180 gallons).

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 74°F – 82°F (23°C – 28°C)
