Description

Sunrise Pygmy Basslet (Pseudochromis flavivertex)

Overview

The Sunrise Pygmy Basslet is a brilliantly colored reef fish displaying a beautiful blend of violet-blue and golden-yellow hues, resembling the colors of a tropical sunrise. Small, hardy, and vibrant, this active species adds both personality and beauty to marine aquariums of all sizes.

Origin

Native to the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around the Red Sea and nearby reefs, the Sunrise Pygmy Basslet inhabits coral-rich areas and rocky crevices where it can dart for cover and hunt for small prey.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on a diet of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods. Feed once or twice daily for optimal coloration and vitality.

Tank Mates

Generally peaceful when kept with similarly sized community fish such as gobies, wrasses, and clownfish. However, like most dottybacks, it can become territorial if confined or housed with similar species. Best kept singly in smaller tanks unless space and hiding spots are abundant.

Aggression

Mildly territorial, especially toward similar-looking or same-gender fish. Providing rockwork, caves, and visual barriers helps reduce territorial disputes and promotes natural behavior.

Experience Level

An excellent choice for beginner to intermediate marine aquarists. The Sunrise Pygmy Basslet is hardy, easy to feed, and completely reef-safe, making it suitable for nano reefs and larger community systems alike.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 80°F (24°C – 27°C)
