Description

Orange Head Basslet (Pseudochromis steenei)

Overview

The Orange Head Basslet, also known as Steene’s Dottyback, is a striking and confident reef fish recognized for its vivid orange-yellow head and deep purple-blue body. Bold and full of personality, this species brings brilliant color and lively behavior to larger marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, the Orange Head Basslet inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas, sheltering in crevices while actively patrolling its territory.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods. Feed once or twice daily to maintain vibrant coloration and good health.

Tank Mates

Best suited to semi-aggressive or larger community aquariums. It can be housed with robust tank mates like wrasses, tangs, and angelfish but should not be kept with very timid or small fish, as it can be territorial. Avoid mixing with other dottybacks in confined spaces.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive, particularly toward similar-sized or similarly shaped species. Providing ample rockwork, caves, and swimming space helps reduce aggression and allows natural behavior.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. The Orange Head Basslet is hardy and adaptable but requires careful tankmate selection and a well-structured environment to thrive.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 80°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, confident, and hardy, the Orange Head Basslet makes an impressive centerpiece fish for aquarists seeking a bold and vibrant addition to their marine setup.
