Orchid Pygmy Basslet (Pseudochromis fridmani)

Overview

The Orchid Pygmy Basslet, or Orchid Dottyback, is one of the most popular and striking reef fish, displaying a vivid magenta to purple body with a graceful, peaceful demeanor. Hardy, reef-safe, and full of color, it’s an ideal choice for both new and experienced marine aquarists.

Origin

Native to the Red Sea, the Orchid Pygmy Basslet inhabits coral reefs and rocky areas, often seen hovering near ledges and caves in small groups or pairs. Captive-bred specimens are widely available and adapt exceptionally well to aquarium life.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods. Feed once or twice daily to maintain its vivid coloration and health.

Tank Mates

Peaceful compared to most dottybacks, the Orchid Pygmy Basslet does well with a wide range of community fish, including gobies, wrasses, and clownfish. Avoid aggressive tank mates or other dottybacks in smaller aquariums.

Aggression

Mildly territorial, especially around its chosen hiding area. When provided with ample rockwork and swimming space, it coexists peacefully with most other reef fish.

Experience Level

Excellent for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Hardy, reef-safe, and easy to feed, this species is a perfect introduction to dottybacks and small reef fish.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 80°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Vibrant, hardy, and peaceful, the Orchid Pygmy Basslet is a stunning and reliable choice for adding color and activity to any reef or community aquarium.
