Horseshoe Tang – Acanthurus fowleri

Overview:
The Horseshoe Tang is a visually striking and active marine herbivore, featuring a dark gray body with a distinctive horseshoe-shaped marking near the tail and subtle blue accents along its fins. Its bold coloration and energetic swimming make it a standout in large reef aquariums.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, typically found on coral reefs and lagoons throughout the western and central Pacific regions.

Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous – thrives on marine algae, seaweed, and spirulina-based foods, supplemented occasionally with meaty foods like mysis shrimp for a balanced diet and optimal coloration.

Tank Mates:
Best kept with peaceful to moderately semi-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with very aggressive or very small species to reduce stress and territorial disputes.

Aggression:
Moderately territorial – may defend feeding or swimming areas, but generally compatible with other robust species in spacious aquariums.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced aquarists – requires a mature aquarium with ample swimming space, stable water parameters, and a proper herbivore diet.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 125+ gallons

The Horseshoe Tang is a visually striking, active herbivore, perfect for reef or large community marine setups where a bold and dynamic centerpiece is desired.
