Description

Coloured Leaf Fish (Taenianotus triacanthus)

Overview

The Coloured Leaf Fish, also known as the Leaf Scorpionfish, is a unique and highly camouflaged reef dweller that resembles a drifting leaf. Found in a range of striking colors—red, yellow, pink, brown, or white—it uses its disguise to ambush prey, making it a fascinating addition to a peaceful marine display or predatory aquarium.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef, Taenianotus triacanthus lives among coral rubble, sponges, and soft corals where it blends seamlessly with its surroundings.

Feeding

A carnivore that prefers live foods such as small shrimp at first, but can adapt to frozen meaty foods like mysis, krill, and chopped seafood with time. Feed once daily, ensuring prey items are appropriately sized.

Tank Mates

Best suited to peaceful tank mates too large to be considered prey, such as tangs, butterflyfish, and angelfish. Avoid aggressive species or small fish and crustaceans that could be eaten.

Aggression

A peaceful and slow-moving species that relies on camouflage rather than aggression. It spends much of its time perched on rocks or corals.

Experience Level

Ideal for intermediate aquarists. While hardy, it requires a stable, mature aquarium and patience during feeding adaptation.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 80°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, mysterious, and beautifully camouflaged, the Coloured Leaf Fish is a mesmerizing addition for aquarists seeking a rare and distinctive showpiece.
