Description

Dot Dash Rabbitfish (Siganus lineatus)

Overview

The Dot Dash Rabbitfish, also known as the Goldlined Rabbitfish, is a striking and hardy reef fish featuring a shimmering silver body overlaid with golden horizontal lines and blue dashes. Peaceful, active, and highly effective at algae control, this species is both beautiful and functional in larger reef or community aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-West Pacific, particularly around Indonesia, northern Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef, Siganus lineatus inhabits coastal reefs, lagoons, and seagrass beds, often seen grazing in pairs or small groups.

Feeding

Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae, seaweed, and plant-based foods. Offer nori, spirulina, and high-quality herbivore pellets, with occasional meaty foods for variety. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain color and condition.

Tank Mates

Generally peaceful and reef-safe with caution. Ideal companions include tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and clownfish. Avoid aggressive species and ensure ample swimming space. May occasionally nip soft corals if underfed.

Aggression

Typically peaceful, though may show mild territorial behavior toward similar-shaped fish. Keep singly unless housed in a very large system.

Experience Level

Suitable for intermediate aquarists. Hardy, adaptable, and beneficial for algae control, but requires a spacious, mature aquarium with plenty of grazing surfaces.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Graceful, hardy, and an excellent algae grazer, the Dot Dash Rabbitfish adds both color and balance to large reef and community aquariums.
