Description

Radiata Lionfish (Pterois radiata)

Overview

The Radiata Lionfish, also known as the Clearfin or Tailbar Lionfish, is a stunning and less common species distinguished by its bright reddish-orange body, elegant white fin rays, and distinctive horizontal tail bands. Graceful, peaceful, and mesmerizing in motion, this smaller lionfish makes a spectacular showpiece for predatory or species-only marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, and the Great Barrier Reef, Pterois radiata inhabits rocky reefs, coral slopes, and lagoons, often hiding in crevices during the day and hunting at night.

Feeding

A carnivorous predator that prefers live foods initially—such as small shrimp or fish—but can be trained to accept frozen meaty foods like silversides, krill, and mysis shrimp. Feed once daily, ensuring food pieces are appropriately sized.

Tank Mates

Best kept with other peaceful, medium-to-large species such as tangs, angelfish, and hawkfish. Avoid small fish or crustaceans that can be mistaken for prey.

Aggression

Generally peaceful and solitary. It poses no threat to fish too large to eat but should not be kept with other lionfish species in smaller tanks due to territorial behavior.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. The Radiata Lionfish is hardy but requires a mature system with stable water quality and plenty of hiding spaces.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 80°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Elegant, hardy, and rare, the Radiata Lionfish is a breathtaking addition to any large, peaceful marine aquarium—perfect for aquarists seeking a standout showpiece.
