Description

White Belly Wrasse (Halichoeres leucoxanthus)

Overview

The White Belly Wrasse is a graceful and active reef fish known for its bright yellow upper body and contrasting white underside. Peaceful and hardy, this wrasse adds lively movement and subtle color to reef or community aquariums while helping control pests like flatworms and small invertebrates.

Origin

Native to the Indian Ocean, particularly around the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Halichoeres leucoxanthus inhabits coral reefs and sandy lagoons, often foraging among rocks and coral heads.

Feeding

An omnivorous feeder that thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. It will also graze naturally on small invertebrates within the aquarium. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal companions include tangs, anthias, gobies, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid keeping with overly territorial or predatory fish.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though it may show mild territorial behavior toward other wrasses, especially in smaller tanks. Provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.

Experience Level

Great for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, adaptable, and easy to feed, making it a reliable and attractive choice for most marine setups.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG
