Description

Pinkface Wrasse (Halichoeres ornatissimus)

Overview

The Pinkface Wrasse, also known as the Ornate Wrasse, is a stunning and active reef species admired for its bright green body, vibrant blue markings, and distinctive pink facial pattern. Constantly on the move, this colorful wrasse adds both beauty and utility to reef aquariums, helping control pests such as flatworms and small invertebrates.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Hawaii and the central Pacific, Halichoeres ornatissimus inhabits coral reefs and lagoons, often found darting among rocks and corals in search of food.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. It also naturally grazes on small invertebrates in the tank. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species, the Pinkface Wrasse pairs well with tangs, gobies, anthias, and other non-aggressive fish. Avoid overly territorial wrasses or large predatory species.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though males may show mild territorial behavior toward similar wrasses in smaller aquariums. Provide plenty of swimming space and live rock for hiding and foraging.

Experience Level

Great for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, colorful, and active, it’s a rewarding addition to most community or reef aquariums.
