Description

Scarlet Head Wrasse (Halichoeres rubricephalus)

Overview

The Scarlet Head Wrasse is a stunning and energetic reef fish, easily recognized by its vivid red head contrasting beautifully with its green and blue patterned body. Peaceful, hardy, and constantly active, this wrasse makes a striking and functional addition to marine aquariums, where it helps control pests such as flatworms and small invertebrates.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, Halichoeres rubricephalus inhabits coral reefs and sandy lagoon areas, often foraging among coral rubble and rockwork.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. It will also graze on natural prey in the aquarium. Feed 2–3 times daily for best color and health.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species, including tangs, gobies, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid housing with overly territorial or aggressive fish.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though mild territorial behavior may appear toward similar species in smaller tanks. Provide ample live rock, hiding spaces, and open swimming areas.

Experience Level

Suitable for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, adaptable, and colorful, this wrasse does well in mature systems with a soft sand bed for burrowing and rest.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Vibrant, resilient, and full of character, the Scarlet Head Wrasse is a fantastic choice for aquarists seeking a lively, reef-safe species that adds both color and activity to the tank.
