Description

Green Face Wrasse (Halichoeres cosmetus)

Overview

The Green Face Wrasse, also known as the Adorned or Elegant Wrasse, is a beautifully patterned reef fish featuring a vivid green face, orange and blue body markings, and a bright yellow tail. Active and peaceful, this species is both hardy and eye-catching—an excellent addition to reef or community aquariums where it helps control small invertebrate pests.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, Halichoeres cosmetus inhabits coral reefs and sandy lagoons, foraging among rocks and coral rubble for small prey.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. It will also naturally graze on small invertebrates in the aquarium. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal companions include tangs, gobies, anthias, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid highly aggressive or territorial fish.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though minor territorial behavior may occur toward similar wrasses in smaller aquariums. Provide live rock for foraging and a sandy substrate for resting.

Experience Level

Suitable for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy and adaptable once settled in a mature aquarium with stable conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, hardy, and full of activity, the Green Face Wrasse is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add both utility and beauty to a peaceful marine aquarium.
