Description

Picta Wrasse (Coris picta)

Overview

The Picta Wrasse, also known as the Painted Wrasse, is a striking species that displays vivid red, orange, and blue coloration with intricate patterns across its body. Active, intelligent, and full of character, this wrasse makes a bold centerpiece for larger marine aquariums while providing natural pest control.

Origin

Endemic to the Western Pacific Ocean, particularly around Australia and New Caledonia, Coris picta inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones where it forages for small crustaceans and mollusks.

Feeding

A carnivorous species that thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis, krill, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily. It will also graze on small invertebrates in the tank.

Tank Mates

Best suited to large aquariums with robust tank mates such as tangs, angels, and triggerfish. Avoid housing with small ornamental crustaceans or very passive species, as they may be preyed upon.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive. Juveniles are peaceful, but adults can become territorial, especially toward smaller wrasses. Provide plenty of open space, live rock, and a deep sand bed for burrowing.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. Hardy and adaptable once settled but requires a spacious, mature system and a sandy substrate for resting.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 81°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Vibrant, hardy, and full of personality, the Picta Wrasse is an eye-catching and rewarding addition to larger marine aquariums seeking a splash of color and activity.
