Description

Lyretail Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare)

Overview

The Lyretail Wrasse, also known as the Moon Wrasse, is a bold and colorful species featuring electric blue, green, and yellow hues with a distinctive crescent-shaped tail. Hardy, active, and full of personality, this wrasse brings energy and vibrancy to large marine aquariums but is best suited for semi-aggressive community setups.

Origin

Widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, Maldives, and Australia, Thalassoma lunare inhabits coral reefs and coastal lagoons, often found darting among rocks and coral heads.

Feeding

A carnivore that enjoys a varied diet of frozen mysis, krill, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily for best health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Best kept with other robust, semi-aggressive species such as triggers, large angelfish, tangs, and groupers. Avoid small ornamental shrimp or delicate reef fish, as they may be seen as food.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive. Juveniles are generally peaceful but become territorial as they mature. Provide plenty of swimming space and rockwork to establish territories.

Experience Level

Suitable for intermediate aquarists. Very hardy once established and adapts well to a variety of marine setups. Requires a spacious tank with stable water conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, energetic, and durable, the Lyretail Wrasse is a perfect choice for aquarists seeking a lively centerpiece fish for larger semi-aggressive marine aquariums.
