Description

Dusky Wrasse (Halichoeres marginatus)

Overview

The Dusky Wrasse is an attractive and hardy reef fish known for its shimmering green body accented with subtle blue markings and a dusky, dark-edged tail. Peaceful, active, and full of character, this species makes an excellent addition to reef or community aquariums where it helps control pests like flatworms and small invertebrates.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Red Sea, Halichoeres marginatus inhabits shallow coral reefs and sandy lagoons, where it forages for small crustaceans among coral rubble.

Feeding

An omnivore that enjoys a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. It also naturally grazes on small invertebrates in the tank. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal companions include tangs, gobies, anthias, and fairy wrasses. Avoid aggressive or overly dominant fish that may harass it.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though males can show mild territorial behavior toward similar wrasses in confined tanks. Provide live rock for hiding and a sandy substrate for burrowing.

Experience Level

Suitable for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, colorful, and easy to maintain in a mature, stable aquarium with a sand bed.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
