Description

Secretive Pyjama Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus evanidus)

Overview

The Secretive Pyjama Wrasse is a small, peaceful, and reef-safe species admired for its striking black and white striped “pyjama” pattern and subtle hints of red and yellow. Shy by nature, it often hides among live rock during the day, emerging to forage in the morning and late afternoon, adding quiet beauty and intrigue to reef aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly Indonesia and the Philippines, Pseudocheilinus evanidus inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones, where it hides in crevices and under ledges.

Feeding

A carnivore that thrives on a diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily in small portions to mimic natural foraging behavior.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe, ideal for tanks with non-aggressive fish such as gobies, clownfish, anthias, and small wrasses. Avoid overly aggressive or large predatory species that may stress this shy wrasse.

Aggression

Extremely peaceful. Rarely shows territorial behavior but prefers ample hiding spaces to feel secure.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. Requires a mature, stable reef aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding and natural microfauna for grazing.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 81°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Shy, peaceful, and visually striking, the Secretive Pyjama Wrasse is perfect for aquarists seeking a small, reef-safe wrasse that adds subtle charm and activity to a mature marine aquarium.
