Description

Gaimard Clown Wrasse (Coris gaimard)

Overview

The Gaimard Clown Wrasse, also known as the Red Coris Wrasse, is a vibrant and hardy species that undergoes a dramatic color transformation as it matures. Juveniles are bright orange-red with white spots, while adults develop bold blue and green hues with a yellow tail. Active and inquisitive, this wrasse adds color and personality to any large marine aquarium.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Fiji, Tahiti, and the Great Barrier Reef, Coris gaimard inhabits coral reefs and sandy areas where it forages for small invertebrates.

Feeding

A carnivore that thrives on frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily. This species also naturally hunts small crustaceans and worms within live rock and sand.

Tank Mates

Best kept with robust community fish such as tangs, angelfish, and larger wrasses. Avoid very small fish and ornamental crustaceans, which may be eaten.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive. Generally peaceful as a juvenile but can become territorial as it matures. Provide plenty of swimming space, live rock, and a sandy substrate for burrowing.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Requires a large, mature aquarium (minimum 125 gallons) with stable water parameters and a deep sand bed.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, energetic, and full of personality, the Gaimard Clown Wrasse is a stunning centerpiece for larger marine aquariums, offering both beauty and fascinating behavioral displays.
