Orange Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides pectoralis)

Overview

The Orange Cleaner Wrasse is a slender, elegant reef fish known for its distinctive orange and black coloration and fascinating cleaning behavior. This species helps maintain tank health by picking parasites and dead tissue from other fish, adding both beauty and function to a peaceful reef environment.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef, Labroides pectoralis inhabits coral reefs where it establishes cleaning stations for larger fish.

Feeding

In the wild, this species primarily feeds on parasites and mucus from other fish. In aquariums, it may adapt to a diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Frequent small feedings are best to ensure proper nutrition.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe. Ideal tank mates include tangs, angelfish, gobies, and other non-aggressive species that tolerate or benefit from cleaning. Avoid aggressive or predatory fish that may harass or eat it.

Aggression

Peaceful. Generally non-aggressive toward other species but may compete with other cleaner wrasses or similar fish for food.

Experience Level

Recommended for experienced aquarists. Requires a mature, stable system with excellent water quality and careful feeding to adapt successfully in captivity.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
