Description

Hawaiian Redtail Wrasse (Anampses chrysocephalus)

Overview

The Hawaiian Redtail Wrasse is a striking and graceful reef fish, showcasing brilliant blue, green, and red coloration with a distinctive red tail and intricate patterning. Peaceful and active, this species adds elegance and movement to mature reef aquariums while helping to control small invertebrate populations.

Origin

Native to the Hawaiian Islands and parts of the central Pacific Ocean, Anampses chrysocephalus inhabits coral reefs and rocky slopes, where it forages among the substrate for small crustaceans and worms.

Feeding

An omnivore that thrives on frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Provide live rock to support natural foraging behavior. Feed 2–3 times daily in small portions.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe, suitable for community aquariums with tangs, gobies, anthias, and other non-aggressive fish. Avoid large or aggressive species that may bully or outcompete it.

Aggression

Very peaceful. Rarely aggressive toward tank mates but may show mild territoriality toward other Anampses species. Requires ample hiding spots and a sand bed for burrowing.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Sensitive during acclimation and requires a mature, stable system with fine sand and excellent water quality.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 74°F – 80°F (23°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
