Description

Snake Coral Polyp (Isaurus sp.)

Overview:
The Snake Coral Polyp is a unique and rarely seen soft coral, recognized for its elongated, tubular polyps that resemble tiny snakes or worms. When extended, the polyps create an unusual and striking display, making it a fascinating centerpiece for collectors and advanced reef keepers.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, where it grows in shaded reef crevices and rubble zones.

Feeding:
Mostly photosynthetic, supported by symbiotic zooxanthellae. Benefits greatly from supplemental feedings of phytoplankton, microplankton, and other liquid coral foods. Its tubular polyps may also capture small particulates from the water column.

Tank Mates:
Reef-safe. Best kept with peaceful fish and invertebrates that won’t nip or disturb its extended polyps.

Aggression:
Non-aggressive and slow-growing, posing little risk to neighboring corals.

Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced. While hardy under proper care, it requires stable water parameters, moderate lighting, and moderate water flow to thrive. Prefers areas with indirect light or gentle shading to mimic natural habitats.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–25.5°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.025

  • dKH: 8–12
