Overview:
The Yellow Orange Blotch (OB) Peacock Cichlid is a striking hybrid from Lake Malawi lineage, known for its bold, random patches of yellow, orange, white, and black. No two OB Peacocks look exactly alike, making each fish a unique showpiece. This variety combines the vivid colors of Aulonocara species with the high contrast and attitude of Mbuna genes—resulting in a cichlid that’s as eye-catching as it is active.
Origin:
While pure Aulonocara species are native to Lake Malawi, the OB Peacock is a man-made hybrid, typically bred from crossing colorful peacocks with OB Mbuna or other Haplochromines to produce this dramatic blotched pattern.
Feeding:
Omnivorous and easy to feed. Offer a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based flakes, and occasional frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Avoid excessive protein to prevent Malawi bloat.
Tank Mates:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament, such as other peacocks, haps, and less aggressive Mbuna. Avoid mixing with overly aggressive species or slow, long-finned fish. Ideal in species or African cichlid community tanks.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
pH: 7.8–8.6
Hardness: 10–20 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons for adults
Provide rockwork, caves, and open swimming areas
Special Notes:
OB Peacocks are hybrid-only and not found in the wild
Males show brighter coloration; females are usually more muted with smaller blotches
Avoid crossbreeding with other OB variants if maintaining strain purity
Hardy and well-suited to intermediate and experienced aquarists
The Yellow Orange Blotch Peacock is a perfect choice for hobbyists looking to add vibrant color, bold personality, and unpredictable patterning to their African cichlid aquarium. A true living gem with attitude!
