Flowerhorn Cichlid – Platinum Golden Base
Overview:
The Platinum Golden Base (often shortened to PGB) is one of the most striking and luxurious Flowerhorn strains. Its main appeal is its pure platinum-white body with a golden or yellow undertone, often glowing under aquarium lighting. This strain combines rare metallic coloration with the typical Flowerhorn’s kok (head hump) and pearling, making it a highly sought-after show specimen.
Origin:
Selective hybridization of Golden Base Flowerhorns (known for their fading and golden base genes) with strains carrying platinum/white genetic traits. Popularly developed and refined in Thailand and Malaysia for the ornamental fish trade.
Feeding:
Staple Diet: Premium Flowerhorn pellets (growth, color, kok-enhancement formulas).
Supplementary Foods: Frozen shrimp, krill, bloodworms, and insects to boost kok development and growth.
Color Boost: Carotenoid- or spirulina-rich foods to intensify the golden sheen.
Tank Mates:
Best housed alone due to extreme aggression.
Only suitable for tank mates in very large aquariums with robust, equally aggressive species (though not recommended).
Aggression Level:
Very High. Platinum Golden Bases are territorial and usually best kept as a single centerpiece fish.
Experience Level:
Intermediate to Advanced. Requires prior cichlid-keeping experience.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 78–84°F (25–29°C)
pH: 7.4–8.0
Hardness: 8–20 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons+ for a single fish.
Unique Features:
Coloration: Brilliant platinum-white base with golden hues or undertones, often metallic in shine.
Pearling: Can show subtle or dense pearling, depending on lineage.
Head (Kok): Prominent, rounded hump, usually soft Malau-style kok.
Body Shape: Thick, muscular Kamfa-like build with flowing fins.
Rarity: Considered a collector’s grade strain due to its luminous platinum sheen.
✨ The Platinum Golden Base Flowerhorn is a luxury variant admired for its rare coloration and show-quality presence. It symbolizes purity, wealth, and prestige among Flowerhorn keepers and is often the pride of private collections.
