Sunburst Carp Gudgeon (Hypseleotris cyprinoides)
Overview
The Sunburst Carp Gudgeon is a small, peaceful freshwater fish notable for its iridescent golden-orange hues and subtle striping, giving it a “sunburst” appearance. Active yet calm, it adds lively movement and colour to community aquariums or biotope setups.
Origin
Native to northern Australia, Southeast Asia, and parts of New Guinea. Commonly found in slow-moving rivers, creeks, and estuaries with sandy or muddy substrates and aquatic vegetation.
Feeding
Omnivorous. Accepts small flakes, sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia), and occasional live foods. A varied diet promotes colouration and overall health.
Tank Mates
Peaceful and suitable for small community tanks. Compatible with rainbowfish, small tetras, microbarbs, peaceful cichlids, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid large or predatory fish that may see them as prey.
Aggression
Non-aggressive. May display mild territoriality among conspecifics but generally peaceful. Best kept in groups of 5 or more to encourage natural schooling behaviour.
Experience Level
Beginner to intermediate. Hardy, adaptable, and easy to maintain in well-planted tanks with moderate water flow.
