Description

Bicolor Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus uspi)

Overview

The Bicolor Foxface is a rare and striking species distinguished by its dramatic two-tone coloration—rich black on the front half of its body and bright yellow on the rear. Hardy, peaceful, and a superb algae grazer, this beautiful rabbitfish adds both function and flair to large reef or community aquariums.

Origin

Endemic to Fiji and surrounding Pacific islands, Siganus uspi inhabits coral-rich lagoons and outer reef slopes, often found in pairs grazing among rocks and coral heads.

Feeding

Primarily herbivorous, it thrives on a varied diet of marine algae, seaweed, and plant-based foods. Supplement with spirulina, nori, and herbivore pellets, along with occasional meaty treats. Feed 2–3 times daily for best health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with caution. Compatible with most community fish such as tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and clownfish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species, and ensure plenty of swimming space and rockwork.

Aggression

Generally calm and non-aggressive, though it may display mild territorial behavior toward similar-shaped species. Keep singly unless in a very large system.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. The Bicolor Foxface is hardy and adaptable but does best in a mature, stable aquarium with ample algae growth and hiding areas.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Rare, hardy, and visually stunning, the Bicolor Foxface Rabbitfish is both a natural algae controller and a standout showpiece for any large reef or community aquarium.
