Overview:
The Blue Zebra Angelfish is a stunning variant of the classic Pterophyllum scalare, featuring vertical zebra-like stripes over a shimmering blue or steel-toned body. With its graceful, tall fins and captivating movement, this angelfish is a centerpiece species in any freshwater community or planted aquarium. Selectively bred for its vibrant sheen and strong striping, it combines classic beauty with a modern twist.
Origin:
A selectively bred morph of the wild angelfish, which originates from slow-moving waters in the Amazon River Basin in Peru, Brazil, and Colombia. The Blue Zebra variant was developed in the aquarium trade for enhanced color and pattern.
Feeding:
Omnivorous and easy to feed. Offer a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and granules, as well as frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to support color and health.
Tank Mates:
Generally peaceful, but semi-territorial, especially when breeding. Ideal tank mates include tetras (larger-bodied species like black skirts or rummynose), rainbowfish, Corydoras, gouramis, and other peaceful community fish. Avoid fin-nippers and very small fish like neon tetras (may be seen as food when the angelfish grows).
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
pH: 6.5–7.5
Soft to moderately hard water
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (taller tanks preferred for full fin display)
Prefers calm waters, planted environments, and vertical décor
Behavior & Personality:
Intelligent and social
Will form hierarchies in groups
Can be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups (with enough space)
Special Notes:
May form monogamous breeding pairs and lay eggs on vertical surfaces
Excellent centerpiece for Amazon biotope or planted tanks
Vibrant blue coloration is best seen under quality lighting and good water conditions
Hardy and well-suited for both intermediate and advanced hobbyists
The Blue Zebra Angelfish offers a perfect blend of classic elegance and modern color, making it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a striking, graceful, and peaceful centerpiece in a freshwater community or aquascaped tank.
