Description

Cosmos Wrasse (Halichoeres cosmetus)

Overview

The Cosmos Wrasse, also known as the Adorned or Elegant Wrasse, is a striking and active reef fish featuring vivid green, orange, and blue markings with a bright yellow tail. Hardy and peaceful, this beautifully patterned species adds constant color and energy to reef or community aquariums while helping control unwanted pests like flatworms and small invertebrates.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, Halichoeres cosmetus inhabits coral reefs and sandy lagoons, often seen foraging among live rock and coral rubble.

Feeding

An omnivore that enjoys a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. It also naturally grazes on small invertebrates in the aquarium. Feed 2–3 times daily.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most species, it coexists well with tangs, gobies, anthias, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid aggressive or overly territorial fish that may intimidate it.

Aggression

Generally peaceful, though minor territorial behavior may occur toward similar wrasses in confined tanks. Provide ample live rock, open swimming space, and a sand bed for resting.

Experience Level

Ideal for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy, colorful, and easy to care for, the Cosmos Wrasse adapts well to mature reef or community aquariums.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, hardy, and full of personality, the Cosmos Wrasse is a fantastic addition for aquarists seeking a lively and reef-safe species to brighten their marine aquarium.
