Description

Giant Colombian Ramshorn (Marisa Snail) Marisa cornuarietis

Overview

The Giant Colombian Ramshorn is a large, attractive freshwater snail known for its distinctive striped, wheel-shaped shell and impressive algae-eating ability. Active and hardy, it makes an excellent addition to aquariums needing strong clean-up support.

Origin

Native to Central and South America, commonly found in slow-moving rivers, marshes, and lakes with abundant plant and algae growth.

Feeding

Omnivorous. Consumes algae, leftover food, soft plants, and detritus. Will eat certain live plants, so should not be kept in heavily planted aquascapes with delicate species. Supplement with algae wafers or vegetables (zucchini, spinach).

Tank Mates

Peaceful with fish and other invertebrates. Avoid aggressive or snail-eating species such as puffers, loaches, or large cichlids.

Aggression

Non-aggressive. May compete for food with smaller snails.

Experience Level

Great for beginners—robust, easy to care for, and tolerant of a wide range of water conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 68¬∞F ‚Äì 82¬∞F (20¬∞C ‚Äì 28¬∞C)

  • pH: 7.0 ‚Äì 8.2 (requires harder, alkaline water to maintain shell health)

  • Hardness: 8 ‚Äì 20 dGH

  • Notes: Keep calcium levels adequate to prevent shell erosion.

Large, hardy, and efficient, the Giant Colombian Ramshorn is an excellent clean-up snail for community tanks—especially where strong algae control is desired.
