Description

Leather Rock Mushroom (Fungiidae Coral) (Rhodactis sp.)

(Also known as Leather Mushroom Coral, Elephant Ear Mushroom Coral, or Textured Rock Mushroom Coral)

Overview

The Leather Rock Mushroom (Rhodactis sp.) is a robust and attractive soft coral (Corallimorpharian) admired for its thick, leathery texture and velvety, undulating surface. Its broad, fleshy oral disc can reach impressive sizes and displays a range of colours including green, brown, blue, tan, and metallic hues. The short, rounded vesicles covering the surface give it a soft, rippled look that moves subtly with the current. Durable, adaptable, and easy to care for, the Leather Rock Mushroom is an excellent coral for both beginners and experienced aquarists, providing colour, structure, and natural movement in shaded or moderate-light reef zones.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Typically found in protected reef slopes, lagoon edges, and rubble zones, where light is gentle and water flow moderate.

Feeding

The Leather Rock Mushroom Coral is photosynthetic, housing zooxanthellae that provide most of its nutrition. Supplemental feeding enhances growth and colour vibrancy. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Mysis or enriched brine shrimp

  • Finely chopped seafood (shrimp, clam, or fish)

  • Marine snow or fine coral foods

Target feeding helps maintain rapid growth and supports propagation, especially in lower-light aquariums.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting. Rhodactis prefers gentle, diffused illumination and may fade or contract under overly bright lighting.

  • PAR range: 50–150 µmol/m²/s

  • Ideal placement in shaded or lower areas of the reef.

  • Blue and actinic spectrums enhance fluorescent and metallic colour tones.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle, variable currents are best, allowing full expansion and preventing debris accumulation. Strong, direct flow can damage soft tissue or cause detachment.

Placement

  • Place on lower rockwork or substrate, ideally in shaded or partially lit zones.

  • Ensure adequate spacing (5–10 cm / 2–4 inches) from other corals to avoid irritation or overgrowth.

  • Rhodactis attaches easily to rock and can spread through budding or tissue fission, forming attractive colonies over time.

  • Avoid placing near aggressive stinging corals.

Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (clownfish, gobies, wrasses, tangs, blennies, etc.)

  • Invertebrates such as snails, shrimp, and small hermit crabs

  • Other soft corals and non-aggressive LPS species

Avoid:

  • Aggressive LPS corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)

  • Butterflyfish or angelfish that may nip at soft tissue

Aggression

Moderate. Rhodactis corals can release mild toxins (allelopathy) and may outcompete nearby species. Maintain spacing to prevent contact or competition.

Experience Level

Beginner. The Leather Rock Mushroom Coral is exceptionally hardy and adaptable, ideal for aquarists of all levels. It thrives in varied lighting and nutrient conditions and adds a natural, textural element to both nano and large reef aquariums.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12

  • Calcium: 380–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

  • Nitrate: <10 ppm (tolerant up to 15 ppm)

  • Phosphate: <0.05 ppm

  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 litres (13 gallons); suitable for nano reefs or larger mixed coral systems

Stable, mature water conditions and moderate nutrients support optimal growth and vibrant colour.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. The Leather Rock Mushroom Coral is a reliable, low-maintenance species that thrives in shaded areas and adds both visual depth and movement to mixed reef systems. Its adaptability and natural elegance make it a favourite choice for reef aquascaping.
