Description

Lyretail Hogfish (Bodianus anthioides)

Overview

The Lyretail Hogfish, also known as the Lyretail Pigfish or Anthias Hogfish, is a stunning and hardy reef species distinguished by its elegant lyre-shaped tail and vivid reddish-pink body with white markings. Graceful, active, and full of personality, it makes a captivating addition to larger marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region—from the Red Sea and East Africa to Fiji and the Great Barrier Reef—the Lyretail Hogfish inhabits coral reef slopes and lagoons, often darting among rocks and corals in search of small prey.

Feeding

A carnivorous species, the Lyretail Hogfish thrives on a meaty diet of mysis shrimp, krill, chopped clams, squid, and high-quality marine pellets or frozen foods. Offer two to three small feedings daily to maintain health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Best suited to larger community aquariums with robust or semi-aggressive tank mates such as tangs, wrasses, and angelfish. Avoid keeping it with very small fish or ornamental crustaceans, which may be seen as food.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive, particularly toward other hogfish or fish of similar shape or size. Providing plenty of rockwork, hiding spaces, and open swimming room will help reduce territorial disputes.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. The Lyretail Hogfish is hardy and adaptable but requires a large, well-filtered aquarium (minimum 120 gallons) with stable, high-quality water.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Provide a spacious, stable marine environment and a protein-rich diet to keep your Lyretail Hogfish healthy, active, and displaying its signature flowing tail and vibrant coloration.
