Description

Madagascar Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus hemitaeniatus)

Overview

The Madagascar Flasher Wrasse is a dazzling and highly active reef fish, displaying brilliant red, orange, and blue hues with long, flowing fins that “flash” when it courts or feels excited. Peaceful, reef-safe, and full of personality, this species is a showstopper in any marine aquarium, especially when kept in groups or harems where males display their spectacular colors.

Origin

Native to the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around Madagascar and nearby island reefs, Paracheilinus hemitaeniatus inhabits coral slopes and reef edges where it swims in small groups among the currents.

Feeding

A carnivore that thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain health and vibrant coloration.

Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef-safe with most community fish. Excellent companions include gobies, anthias, fairy wrasses, and tangs. Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous species that may intimidate it.

Aggression

Very peaceful, though males may show mild sparring or “flashing” displays toward other wrasses—harmless and fascinating to watch. Provide open swimming space and rockwork for security.

Experience Level

Suitable for intermediate aquarists. Hardy and adaptable once acclimated but does best in a mature tank with stable water conditions and a tight-fitting lid (as it may jump).

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 81°F (24°C – 27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, graceful, and endlessly entertaining, the Madagascar Flasher Wrasse is a vibrant and peaceful addition to any reef aquarium—especially stunning when kept as part of a small group.
