Description

Marshall Island Wrasse (Thalassoma lutescens)

Overview

The Marshall Island Wrasse is a vibrant and active reef fish, displaying striking green, yellow, and blue coloration with iridescent highlights. Hardy and energetic, this wrasse adds constant motion and vivid color to large marine aquariums while helping control small invertebrate pests.

Origin

Native to the Marshall Islands and surrounding areas in the Indo-Pacific, Thalassoma lutescens inhabits coral reefs and lagoon slopes, often darting among rock crevices and coral heads in search of food.

Feeding

A carnivore that thrives on frozen mysis, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain vibrant coloration and health.

Tank Mates

Best kept with robust community species such as tangs, angels, and other semi-aggressive wrasses. Avoid very small or delicate invertebrates, as they may be eaten.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive. Males may establish small territories in confined aquariums. Provide plenty of open swimming space, rockwork, and hiding areas.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate aquarists. Requires a mature, spacious aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of room to swim.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Colorful, energetic, and hardy, the Marshall Island Wrasse is a lively addition to larger reef or semi-aggressive community aquariums, offering both visual appeal and natural pest-control behavior.
