Overview:
The Red Banded Mine Sea Urchin is a striking and hardy invertebrate with bold red and white banded spines. Its unique appearance and algae-grazing behavior make it a functional and decorative addition to a marine aquarium.
Origin:
Found in shallow reef environments across the Indo-Pacific region.
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae and biofilm. May accept dried seaweed (nori), spirulina, and algae-based foods if natural growth is limited.
Tank Mates:
Generally reef-safe, though caution is advised with loose corals or rockwork as it may dislodge them while foraging. Best housed with peaceful fish, other invertebrates, and corals that are well-secured.
Aggression:
Non-aggressive, though its sharp spines provide natural defense. Handle with care.
Experience Level:
Intermediate. While hardy, it requires stable water parameters and a mature tank with sufficient algae growth.
