Description

Red Speckled Coral Goby – Caracanthus maculatus

Overview:
The Red Speckled Coral Goby, also known as the Spotted Coral Croucher Goby, is a small, cryptic reef fish with a reddish to pinkish body covered in dark speckles and mottled markings. It belongs to the Scorpaenidae family (closely related to scorpionfish), not true gobies, but it is commonly called a goby due to its size and behavior. This fish is well-camouflaged, often perching motionless among coral branches where it blends seamlessly with its surroundings.

Origin:
Found throughout the Indo-Pacific, especially in coral-rich reefs where it hides among the branches of stony corals (commonly Pocillopora or Acropora).

Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on small crustaceans, zooplankton, and tiny benthic invertebrates. In aquariums, it accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped meaty foods. Feed small amounts multiple times daily.

Tank Mates:
Peaceful, though best kept with small, gentle reef fish. Avoid large or aggressive species that may outcompete or intimidate it. Excellent for nano reefs and coral tanks.

Aggression:
Low. Generally peaceful but may defend its chosen coral or hiding spot from other similar perchers.

Experience Level:
Intermediate. Requires a reef-style aquarium with plenty of coral branches or live rock crevices to perch and hide. Sensitive to water quality, and best suited for well-established reef tanks.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons

The Red Speckled Coral Goby (Caracanthus maculatus) is a beautiful, coral-dwelling nano fish that adds a touch of camouflage and charm to reef aquariums. Its small size and peaceful nature make it a great choice for aquarists looking to stock smaller reef tanks with unique species.
