Description

Striped Rock Mushroom (Fungiidae Coral) (Discosoma sp.)

(Also known as Striped Mushroom Coral, Disc Anemone, or Rock Mushroom Coral)

Overview

The Striped Rock Mushroom (Discosoma sp.) is a colourful and resilient soft coral (Corallimorpharian), admired for its distinct radial striping patterns and smooth, disc-like surface. Available in a stunning range of colours — including blue, red, green, orange, purple, and metallic variations — each mushroom features bold stripes that radiate outward from the mouth, giving it a striking, starburst appearance. Known for its hardiness and adaptability, Discosoma is ideal for both beginners and experienced reef aquarists. Its ability to thrive in shaded areas and moderate light makes it perfect for filling gaps and adding contrast to reef aquascapes.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Found in lagoon slopes, reef flats, and shaded rocky crevices, where light and flow are gentle to moderate.

Feeding

The Striped Rock Mushroom Coral is photosynthetic, relying primarily on zooxanthellae for energy. However, supplemental feeding enhances growth, colour, and reproduction. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Finely chopped seafood or mysis shrimp

  • Marine snow or microplankton

  • Coral food powders or amino acid supplements

Target feeding is not essential but will accelerate growth and intensify colouration.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting. Discosoma mushrooms prefer subdued, diffused illumination and can fade or shrink if exposed to intense direct light.

  • PAR range: 50–150 µmol/m²/s

  • Ideal for lower rockwork, shaded caves, or overhangs.

  • Blue-spectrum or actinic lighting enhances fluorescent striping and metallic tones.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle, variable currents are best, allowing gas exchange without dislodging the coral. Too much flow can cause the mushroom to detach or close tightly.

Placement

  • Place on lower rockwork or substrate where light and flow are soft and even.

  • Ensure adequate space between neighbouring corals — Discosoma can expand and spread rapidly under ideal conditions.

  • The coral attaches naturally to rock and can slowly propagate, forming clusters or carpets over time.

  • Avoid high-traffic areas where invertebrates may irritate the coral.

Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (gobies, wrasses, tangs, blennies, etc.)

  • Shrimp, snails, and small hermit crabs

  • Other soft corals and LPS species with sufficient spacing

Avoid:

  • Aggressive stinging corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)

  • Large angelfish or butterflyfish that may nip at the soft tissue

Aggression

Mildly aggressive. While Discosoma lacks long sweeper tentacles, it can release mild toxins (allelopathy) and overgrow nearby corals, competing for space. Maintain adequate spacing and monitor colony spread.

Experience Level

Beginner. The Striped Rock Mushroom Coral is one of the easiest and most forgiving corals to care for, thriving in a wide range of lighting, nutrient, and flow conditions. It’s an ideal coral for new reef aquarists or as a vibrant filler species in mature systems.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12

  • Calcium: 380–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

  • Nitrate: <10 ppm (tolerates up to 15 ppm)

  • Phosphate: <0.05 ppm

  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 litres (13 gallons); suitable for nano reefs and large mixed systems

Stable, mature water conditions will help maintain colouration and consistent growth.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. The Striped Rock Mushroom Coral is a versatile, hardy soft coral that thrives in shaded or low-light areas. Its striped patterns and rich colouration make it an excellent accent coral that provides contrast and movement without demanding care requirements.
