Sumatran Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus macrocephalus)
Overview
The Sumatran Glass Catfish is a translucent freshwater species, renowned for its ghostly, transparent body that allows you to see its internal organs and skeletal structure. Peaceful and schooling in nature, it adds elegance and movement to community aquariums.
Origin
Native to Sumatra and other parts of Southeast Asia, inhabiting slow-moving rivers, streams, and peat swamps with dense vegetation.
Feeding
Omnivorous but prefers live and frozen foods. Accepts small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and finely crushed high-quality flakes or micro-pellets. Feeding in groups encourages natural schooling behaviour.
Tank Mates
Best kept with peaceful, similarly sized species. Ideal companions include small tetras, rasboras, dwarf gouramis, and other non-aggressive community fish. Avoid large or aggressive fish.
Aggression
Completely peaceful. Relies on schooling for safety; should always be kept in groups of at least 6.
Experience Level
Intermediate. Sensitive to water quality; requires stable, clean, well-oxygenated conditions.
Water Parameters

Temperature: 74°F – 82°F (23°C – 28°C)

pH: 6.0 – 7.5

Hardness: 2 – 12 dGH

Notes: Prefers a dimly lit, heavily planted tank with gentle water flow to mimic natural habitat.

Elegant, peaceful, and fascinating, the Sumatran Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus macrocephalus) is perfect for aquarists seeking a delicate and visually captivating schooling species for community aquariums.
