Sunset Grouper – Epinephelus fasciatus

Overview:
The Sunset Grouper, also known as the Blacktip or Redbanded Grouper, is a striking predatory fish recognized for its reddish-orange body accented with vertical dark bands and bold fin markings. With its powerful build and vivid coloration, it makes a dramatic display in large marine aquariums.

Origin:
Widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea to the central Pacific Ocean.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on meaty marine foods such as shrimp, squid, fish, and other protein-rich offerings. Should be offered a varied diet of fresh or frozen seafood.

Tank Mates:
Best kept with large, robust tank mates such as triggerfish, large wrasses, and other groupers. Not suitable with small fish or invertebrates, as they will be eaten.

Aggression:
Highly aggressive and territorial – should only be housed with other large, equally assertive species in a very spacious tank.

Experience Level:
Advanced aquarists – requires a large system, excellent filtration, and careful selection of tank mates.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180+ gallons

The Sunset Grouper is a bold, powerful predator best suited for advanced aquarists looking to keep a large, aggressive show fish in a predator-specific marine system.
