Overview
The Panda Hogfish, also known as the Axilspot Hogfish, is a striking and hardy marine species featuring a bold contrast of red, white, and black markings that resemble a panda’s pattern. Active and full of personality, this eye-catching fish makes an excellent centerpiece for larger marine aquariums.
Origin
Native to the Indo-Pacific region—from East Africa to the Great Barrier Reef—the Panda Hogfish inhabits coral and rocky reef slopes, often found darting among crevices in search of small prey.
Feeding
A carnivorous species, the Panda Hogfish enjoys a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet marine foods. Feed two to three times daily to support its vibrant coloration and activity levels.
Tank Mates
Generally peaceful with larger or semi-aggressive tank mates, but may prey on very small crustaceans or ornamental shrimp. Ideal companions include wrasses, tangs, triggerfish, and angelfish. Avoid housing with very timid or tiny species.
Aggression
Semi-aggressive, particularly as it matures. It may establish territories and defend them against similar-shaped fish or other hogfish. Providing ample rockwork, caves, and swimming space helps minimize territorial behavior.
