Description
Gem Tang – Zebrasoma gemmatum
Overview:
The Gem Tang is one of the most stunning and exclusive surgeonfish in the hobby. Its velvety black body, speckled with dazzling white “gemstone-like” spots and highlighted by a golden tail, makes it a true centerpiece fish. Highly prized by collectors, the Gem Tang combines rarity with breathtaking beauty.
Origin:
Native to the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around Madagascar, Mauritius, and the Seychelles, where it inhabits coral-rich reef slopes.
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous, grazing constantly on algae. In captivity, provide a diet of nori, spirulina, and high-quality algae-based foods, along with occasional mysis or enriched brine shrimp for variety.
Tank Mates:
Generally peaceful toward most reef fish, though like other tangs, it may become territorial with other surgeonfish, especially those of the Zebrasoma genus. Best kept singly unless housed in an exceptionally large aquarium.
Aggression:
Semi-aggressive – usually peaceful but may defend its space against other tangs.
Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced aquarists – thrives in large, stable reef aquariums with high-quality water and abundant algae or supplemental feeding.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.020–1.025
-
Minimum Tank Size: 180+ gallons
The Gem Tang is a true showstopper – rare, radiant, and guaranteed to be the jewel of any advanced reef aquarium.
