Description

Furry Rock Mushroom (Fungiidae Coral) (Green Rhodactis sp.)

(Also known as Hairy Mushroom Coral, Furry Mushroom Coral, or Elephant Ear Mushroom Coral)

Overview

The Green Furry Rock Mushroom (Rhodactis sp.) is a hardy and visually appealing soft coral (Corallimorpharian)recognised for its dense, hair-like tentacles and lush, textured appearance. Its large, fleshy oral disc is covered with elongated vesicles resembling fine fur, which gently wave in the current. Displaying vivid shades of green — from bright neon to deep emerald — often accented by hints of blue or brown, this coral brings natural movement and colour to shaded areas of the reef. Adaptable and resilient, Rhodactis mushrooms are an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists seeking a low-maintenance coral with a bold, natural look.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Commonly found in protected reef slopes and lagoonal environments, where light is moderate and water movement gentle.

Feeding

The Furry Rock Mushroom Coral is photosynthetic, deriving most of its energy from zooxanthellae within its tissue. Supplemental feeding supports faster growth and stronger colouration. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Mysis or enriched brine shrimp

  • Finely chopped seafood (shrimp, clam, or fish)

  • Marine snow or fine coral foods

Target feeding can stimulate fuller polyp expansion and support propagation.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting. Rhodactis prefers softer, indirect light and may bleach if exposed to intense illumination.

  • PAR range: 50–150 µmol/m²/s

  • Ideal for shaded rockwork or lower sections of the aquarium.

  • Blue-spectrum or actinic lighting enhances fluorescent greens and subtle undertones.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle, variable current allows natural tentacle movement while preventing debris accumulation. Avoid strong, direct flow, which can cause retraction or tissue stress.

Placement

  • Place on lower rockwork or substrate, in shaded or partially lit areas.

  • Provide adequate spacing (8–10 cm / 3–4 inches) from other corals to prevent irritation.

  • Rhodactis attaches easily to rock and can spread through budding or tissue division, forming attractive colonies over time.

  • Avoid contact with aggressive or stinging corals.

Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (wrasses, gobies, tangs, blennies, clownfish, etc.)

  • Invertebrates such as snails, shrimp, and small hermit crabs

  • Other soft corals and non-aggressive LPS species

Avoid:

  • Aggressive LPS corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)

  • Butterflyfish or large angelfish that may nip at soft tissue

Aggression

Moderate. Rhodactis can release mild toxins (allelopathy) and overgrow nearby corals. Maintain spacing to prevent competition and irritation.

Experience Level

Beginner. The Green Furry Rock Mushroom Coral is hardy, adaptable, and ideal for aquarists of all experience levels. It tolerates a wide range of conditions and adds both colour and texture to low-light areas of the reef.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12

  • Calcium: 380–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

  • Nitrate: <10 ppm (tolerant up to 15 ppm)

  • Phosphate: <0.05 ppm

  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 litres (13 gallons); suitable for nano reefs and larger systems

Consistent water quality and moderate nutrient levels support healthy tissue and vibrant green colouration.
