Description
Cabbage Soft Coral (Sinularia dura)
Overview:
The Cabbage Soft Coral is a hardy leather coral with broad, leaf-like branches that resemble cabbage leaves. Its textured, wavy surfaces create a lush, sculptural appearance in reef aquariums, providing both aesthetic appeal and natural shelter for small fish and invertebrates.
Origin:
Indo-Pacific, commonly found on reef flats and slopes in areas of moderate water flow.
Feeding:
Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae. Occasional supplemental feedings of phytoplankton or microplankton can enhance growth and polyp extension but are not required.
Tank Mates:
Reef-safe and compatible with peaceful fish and invertebrates. Should be given space from aggressive corals, as some leather corals may release chemical compounds that affect neighbors.
Aggression:
Moderate. Non-stinging but may engage in chemical competition (allelopathy). Maintaining good water flow and using activated carbon helps minimize effects.
Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, suitable for aquarists of all experience levels. Thrives under moderate lighting, moderate to strong water flow, and stable water parameters.
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–25.5°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
-
