Description

Cultured Toadstool Yellow Soft Coral (Sarcophyton sp.)

(Also known as Yellow Leather Coral or Toadstool Leather Coral)

Overview

The Yellow Toadstool Soft Coral is a hardy and attractive leather coral from the genus Sarcophyton, featuring a smooth, mushroom-like cap and short, fine polyps that give it a soft, velvety appearance. Its golden-yellow to cream colorationmakes it a bright focal point in reef aquariums. This species is photosynthetic and relatively easy to keep, making it one of the best beginner soft corals. It thrives under stable water conditions and moderate lighting, and as a cultured coral, it adapts well to aquarium life.

Origin

Originally found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Fiji, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Cultured specimens are aquacultured for sustainability and improved hardiness, reducing stress compared to wild-collected colonies.

Lighting

Moderate to high lighting. The Yellow Toadstool contains symbiotic zooxanthellae, which provide energy through photosynthesis. Use LED, T5, or metal halide lighting, depending on placement. Under higher light, it maintains its bright yellow colouration; in lower light, it may appear pale or tan.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong, indirect flow. Good circulation helps remove mucus that the coral periodically sheds (a natural cleaning process) and keeps the surface free of detritus. Avoid direct jets of flow aimed at the polyp surface.

Feeding

Primarily photosynthetic, but benefits from occasional supplemental feeding. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Phytoplankton or marine snow

  • Microplankton or coral-specific powdered foods

  • Amino acid supplements (optional for colour enhancement)

Direct feeding is not required but can promote faster growth.

Placement

Place in the mid to upper levels of the tank to ensure sufficient lighting and moderate water movement. Allow ample space around the coral, as it can grow quite large (up to 25–30 cm across) and may release mild allelopathic chemicals that affect nearby corals.

Tank Mates

Excellent for mixed reef aquariums. Compatible with:

  • Clownfish (which may host in its cap)

  • Peaceful reef-safe fish

  • Most other soft corals and hardy LPS species

Avoid direct contact with stinging corals (Torch, Hammer, Galaxea, etc.), and maintain space from other leathers to reduce chemical competition.

Aggression

Peaceful to mildly competitive. May release mild toxins (terpenes) when stressed or overcrowded, so carbon filtration and regular water changes are recommended in mixed coral setups.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Very hardy, fast-growing, and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, making it ideal for first-time coral keepers and established reef aquariums alike.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

  • Hardness (dKH): 8–12

  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm

  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons (150L) for growing colonies

Regular protein skimming and activated carbon help maintain water quality and prevent buildup of organic compounds from leather corals.
