Description

Red Banded Goby – Amblyeleotris wheeleri

Overview:
The Red Banded Goby is a striking sand-dwelling goby known for its slender body, bright red bands, and delicate fins. It often forms a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, sharing burrows and providing mutual protection. Highly active and engaging to watch, this goby is a favorite for sandy reef and mixed-species aquariums.

Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia, Philippines, and northern Australia, inhabiting sandy patches near coral reefs.

Feeding:
Carnivorous – feeds on small invertebrates, zooplankton, and micro-crustaceans. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality sinking pellets. Feed multiple times daily to mimic natural grazing.

Tank Mates:
Peaceful and reef-safe, compatible with other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates. Avoid aggressive or burrow-destroying species that may disturb its habitat.

Aggression:
Low. Territorial only around its burrow but generally peaceful with other inhabitants.

Experience Level:
Intermediate. Requires a deep sandy substrate (3–4 inches) for burrow construction, and optionally, a pistol shrimp companion for natural symbiotic behavior.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–78°F (23–26°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons

The Red Banded Goby (Amblyeleotris wheeleri) is a captivating, burrowing goby that brings color, activity, and interesting shrimp symbiosis to sandy reef aquariums. Its red banding and interactive behavior make it a standout species for marine enthusiasts.
