Description

Redbreasted Hogfish (Cheilinus fasciatus)

Overview

The Redbreasted Hogfish, also known as the Redbreasted Wrasse, is a striking and hardy reef predator known for its bold red chest, vivid green and blue body markings, and confident personality. This species adds brilliant color and lively activity to large marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region—from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Great Barrier Reef—the Redbreasted Hogfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky slopes, where it hunts for small crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates.

Feeding

A carnivorous species, it thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, clam, krill, and high-quality frozen or pellet preparations. Feed two to three times daily for best coloration and health.

Tank Mates

Best suited to large, semi-aggressive communities with robust tank mates like groupers, triggers, tangs, and large wrasses. Avoid keeping with small fish or ornamental crustaceans, as they may be eaten.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. The Redbreasted Hogfish should be provided with plenty of rockwork, caves, and swimming space to reduce aggression and encourage natural behavior.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. This hardy species adapts well to aquarium life but requires a large, well-maintained system (minimum 180 gallons) with strong filtration and stable conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG

  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Provide a spacious, stable environment and a meaty diet to keep your Redbreasted Hogfish thriving and showing off its intense coloration and lively presence.
